Biography
Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Dr. Jillian Camwell currently lives in Troy, Alabama and teaches at Alabama State University in Montgomery. She is a Marigaux Performing Artist and was named a National Finalist for The American Prize in Instrumental Performance, professional division, as well as a National Finalist for The American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music, professional soloist and composer division. She holds degrees from the Universities of Oregon, Northern Colorado, and Calgary, and she has performed throughout North America, Asia, and Europe with a variety of theatrical, orchestral, and chamber music ensembles. She has performed solo and chamber recitals at the International Double Reed Society's annual conferences in Boulder, CO (2022), Flagstaff, AZ (2024), and Indianapolis (2025). She holds the position of English horn with Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Iowa, and she performs regularly with many regional orchestras, including Alabama Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, Tuscaloosa Symphony, Valdosta Symphony, and Meridian Symphony.
Camwell can be heard on two recordings (Timescape, and Sonoroso) with her saxophonist husband, Dave Camwell. In 2021, she released a recording of the complete 40 Progressive Melodies by A.M.R. Barret with Peter Cooper on the Teal Creek Music label. In 2023, she recorded Jenni Brandon's “Lemon Lily Waltz” and Robert W. Smith's Oboe Concerto “Cosmic Harmonies” with pianist Hui-Ting Yang. She most recently recorded “Cosmic Harmonies” in its full version for Oboe and Wind Ensemble. Her performance with Alberta Winds in Calgary, Alberta can be found on YouTube.
Dr. Camwell has been an invited clinician to the Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention and gives regular clinics and master classes to high schools and colleges in the Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida regions. In addition to teaching oboe lessons, reed making, Class Piano, Aural Skills, Music Fundamentals, and Introduction to the Study of Music at ASU, she maintains an active teaching studio in oboe and piano. Camwell also regularly records performance demonstrations of the Alabama All-State High School and Middle School audition etudes and offers clinics and lessons to help students prepare for these and other auditions.
